    1. General Introduction of DMEE

    Founded in 1978, the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Automation(DMEA) is one of the well developed and esteemed faculties of WUSE. The department treasures a devotional, originative, and strong teaching and researching staff, among which there are experts receiving the Special Grant of the State Council, owners of the Medal of Outstanding Young Experts of Hubei Province, nominees of the Cross-Centennial Academic Echelons of Hubei Province, winners of provincial Award of Teachers of Excellence and Award of Teachers of Honor, and scores of winners of the Award of Progress in Science and Technology at the provincial and civic level. Of the staff of more than 70 people in the department, 11 are full professors and 13 associate professors, meanwhile 10 have Doctor’s Degrees and 25 have Master’s Degrees, and 3 are tutors of doctors and 12 are tutors of masters.

    DMEE consists of six teaching & research sections, four research labs, one research center, one experimental center for students, and one training center of vocational skills . They are:

    The Section of the Bases of Mechanical Science,

    The Government Key Laboratory of Digital Textile Equipment of Hubei provence;

    The Hubei Provincial Research & Development Center of Textile Mechanical & Electrical Technology (authorized by the Office of Science and Technology of Hubei Province).

    The experimental center for students consists of 9 Labs, they are:

    Computation Center Lab,

    Lab of Mechanics,

    Industrial Design Lab,

    Industrial Engineering Lab,

    Computation Center Lab,

    These institutions undertake the teaching and researching tasks of the university in the fields of mechanical engineering, pro-mechanical engineering, and part of the teaching of the electrical and computer science courses.

    The vocational training center of DMEE is equipped with advanced CNC machining, refrigeration, 3D molding and CAD, and industrial design equipment. The center is authorized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the National Hi-Tech Education and Training Center to provide training program and grant certificate in related fields.

    The recent decades witnessed prominent advancement in the subject construction of the department. In 1994 the subject of Mechanical Design & Manufacturing and Automation was selected as a key subject of Hubei Province, and was checked and accepted in 2000. The subject began its postgraduate programs in 1995 and has been entitled to confer the Master’s Degree with the authorization of the State Academic Degrees Council and that of the Hubei Province.

    The four specialties in the department are Machine Design & Manufacturing and Their Automation, including 3 orientations of Computer-aided Manufacturing and its Automation, Application and Products Design of Mechano-eletronical Technology, Design and Manufacturing of Mould, Industrial Design, Measuring & Control Technology and Instrumentations, Industrial Engineering.

    Since its establishment, DMEE has made great contribution in talent fostering and scientific research, educated many persons with ability for the economic construction of China, made great academic achievements which were widely acknowledged in the academic circle and praised by the colleagues. Its reputation and influence in Central South China and Eastern China has been well established. The department has also been actively participating in academic exchanges with colleges and universities home and abroad, including some distinguished institutions of higher learning in Russia, UK, US, and Japan, which further strengthened its role as an important training and researching base in China.

    3. Introduction to Specialties and disciplines for Bachelor’s Degree

    DMEE offers five programs of specialties and disciplines for Bachelor Degree.

    3.1 Machine Design & Manufacturing and Their Automation (MDMA)

    MDMAs program includes 3 specialty fields: Computer-aided manufacturing and its automation, Application and products design of mechano-eletronical technology, Design and manufacturing of mould.

    MDMA is the key disciplines of Hubei Province, and is managed with emphasis by the state. The program is made up of three sub-disciplines, including “CAD/CAM”, “Mechatronics Design and Manufacturing”, “Modern Die Design and Manufacturing”. According to individual and social needs and personal interest, students can decide on their own major, for their individual career and professional goal.

    Based on manufacturing science, MDMA has introduced modern IT and automation technologies, and particularly emphasizes the aspects of the information, digitalization, integration, and network in mechanical engineering. MDMA strengthened the education of base, common core knowledge and all-round quality cultivation. It broadens the specialty. The students’ abilities of knowledge and qualities are developed in phase.

    The academic program is such designed to encourage the students to grasp fundamentals firmly, to broaden their view, to stimulate originality, and be prepared for variety of career opportunities. The students are going to be trained to have a good command of CAD, CAM, CAE techniques and a comprehensive knowledge of technical analysis. They will be familiar with the application of microelectronic technology, automatic checkout, digital control and computer operation, and be competent in designing, researching and developing mechatronics products, and be able to realize automatic production with modern processing technology after this B.A. Degree study.

    Main courses include Modern Drawing, Theoretical Mechanics, Strength of Mechanics, Principles of Mechanics, Design Theory of Mechanical System, Machine Design, Engineering Material, Technological Fundamentals of Material Forming, Technical Fundamentals of Machine Manufacturing Technology, Introduction of Modern Manufacturing Technology, Electrical Engineering and Electrical Technique, Fundamentals of Control Theory, Machinery Design Automation, Machinery Production Automation, Mechanical and Electrical Integration, Electromechanical Control Technique, Digital Control of Machine Tools, Computer Control Technique, Die Design and Manufacturing, Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Digital Control Technic and Machine, etc.

    Duration of study: 4 years

    Degree to be awarded: Bachelor in Engineering.

    Associated careers: researcher in electromechanical industries related to design, development and manufacture technology; researcher in research institutes, college teacher; researcher in enterprises related to management of production and equipments.

    3.2 Measuring & Control Technology and Instrumentations (MCTI)

    MCTIs program focuses on super-finish measuring theory and instruments, nanometer measurement, modern tolerance technique, industrialization of nondestructive inspection technique and instruments, design and manufacturing of precision rolling pair and its industrialization.

    This program aims at providing students with training of modern measure and control technology and application of instruments. MCTI lays emphasis on the teaching of conceptual analysis, general design of measuring system and instruments, engineering calculation, accuracy test, basic design of measure and control circuit, and ability of computer application. Graduates are expected to have an advanced level of ability in experiment, test, and data processing.

    Core courses include Mechanics of Instruments, Electronics of Instruments, Basic Theory of Optics, Measuring and Control Theory, Electrical Engineering and Electrical Technique, Computer Application Technology, etc.

    Duration of study: 4 years

    Degree to be awarded: Bachelor in Engineering.

    Associated careers: High-tech companies, government bodies related to design, research and development, teaching, management about measure and control.

    3.3 Industrial Design (ID)

    IDs program is a multidisciplinary program that requires both engineering background and innovative ability in art. It is a professional career with a brilliant future. We focus on cultivating students with the ability to solve problems in products modeling, visual communication and environmental design.

    The students are asked to possess abilities in developing, researching and designing structures, functions, appearance and environment of industrial products, especially electromechanical products. The students should be able to cooperate these aspects and externalize them in molding of products, and to refresh and develop modern industrial products.

    Core courses include Design of Industrial Product, Design and Construction of Industrial Engineering, Theories in Industrial Engineering, Structure, Information System, Computer Technology and Its Application, Engineering Drawing, CAD, Perspectivity and Shadow, Industrial Photograph, Molding Design of Industrial Product, Human Engineering, Die Design and Manufacture, CAD Modeling, Mold Material and Process, Basis of Mechanical Design, Aesthetics, Design Outline, Effect Drawing.

    The graduates of ID program may take up the design, research and development of products in enterprises and high technique estates. They also have the abilities and opportunities to engage in design plan and strategy of products, visualize design of enterprises, and system managements of manufacturing service, etc.

    Duration of study: 4 years

    Degree to be awarded: Bachelor in Engineering.

    3.4 Industrial Engineering (IE)

    This program aims at training students with the knowledge and ability of modern industrial

    engineering and system management, the graduated students can engage in plane, design, evaluation and innovation of manufacturing, management, service for enterprises , research and development organizations.

    Core courses include Base of Electrical Engineering and Electrical Technique, Base of Machine Design, Operations Research, System Engineering, Theory of management, Market sales, Industrial Economics , Management Information System.

    Duration of study: 4 years

    Degree to be awarded: Bachelor in Engineering.
